Get Your German on!

Posted on August 31, 2014 at 9:30 PM

The Pimsleur Approach German 1 is an introductory course, helping you learn the basics of the language and how to say specific phrases that you might use if you are on vacation in Germany or if you run into a German on vacation in the United States.

I've always had a hard time learning other languages, but I'm able to remember words and phrases easier by using this program.  I was lucky enough to get these Pimsleur CDs for review and wanted to share my thoughts on them! I have always wanted to learn to speak German, as it’s part of my heritage. For years my uncle used to laugh at me and say I speak Ox Frog English because my German was a literal English translation.  I have tried learning German before but I have had a difficult time.  As it turns out this is basically a crash course in conversational German, covering the basics you’d need to get around as a tourist–introductions, finding the hotel, making small talk with native speakers, etc.  The best part of it is my kids are using this and using it now as well.

The genius of the Pimsleur system is that it focuses heavily on mimicking native accents and pronunciation, so you really get a feel for how the language should roll off the tongue–something that I’ve always found difficult, if not impossible, with text-based learning.   Since my mother is from Germany she also assists with all of us to make sure we are learning correctly.  In the first few lessons, you 'll learn how to introduce yourself and ask for directions (or how to give directions). So basically, you'll learn how to have a conversation in German. Overall, the Pimsleur Approach German 1 is a fast and easy way to learn the language.

The set consists of sixteen discs covering 32 lessons, each roughly half an hour in length. Each lesson covers some new small piece of conversation and uses rote practice to help you get comfortable expanding your vocabulary.  I do recommend listening to the whole lesson without interruption. It makes it easier to remember.

I have to say the German language is hard. I actually get a sore jaw, trying to sound like the guy on the CD. So I have to try and not sound too much like him and relax. Which is hard to do, because the German language seems a bit harsh and brash.  But to me it sounds like home.  I just can hear my family talking so once you get used to it, it is rather beautiful.

It is not to say that you are going to learn to be fluent in the language when you are done with the program but you will be able to speak and carry on a conversation with a person who speaks the language.  And really it is a lot of fun trying.  You also will not be able to read or write the language as this is strictly a listening and speaking program.

My whole family is benefiting from this language program. I would totally recommend this product.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
